The first to discover the properties of Turkey Tail Mushroom were the Chinese. In the book Bencao Gangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica) written in 1578, the author Li Shizhen mentions Turkey Tail as; "beneficial to one's spirit and vital energy (Chi) and strengthens one's tendon and bone (Jing). If Turkey Tail is taken for a long time, it will make one vigorous and will contribute to a long life." Having a long history in Chinese Medicine, the Mushroom is also favoured in contemporary Japanese medicine and traditionally called kawaritake, or 'cloud mushroom'. This name relates to the shape when looking at the swirls of fruiting bodies from a birds eye view. The Japanese have long studied the effects of this mushroom and have made sure that it has a very special place as a complementary supplement in when administered with contemporary treatments.
Turkey Tail is a polypore mushroom that is classed as a bracket fungi for the way it grows to its wood host. Usually the mushroom grows in groups on decaying hardwood stumps and logs. They come in various different sizes and colours and are found throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Their shape has been likened to a Turkey Tail in the Western world while in Asia they like to think the Mushroom swirls as clouds. Being a very adaptive mushroom, Turkey Tail can even grow in tropical and subtropical environments. It is seen as a very important part of woodland ecology because of its efficiency in breaking down wood.
