This yellow root has been used over the centuries in India for a number of uses that range from cooking, religious rituals, dyeing clothes, and being a part of Ayurvedic Medicine. Indigo Herbs has two great Turmeric products - Turmeric Tincture and Turmeric Powder. Both have been brought to you so that you can enjoy all the benefits of this great yellow root ingredient.

For almost 6,000 years Hindus have held this root sacred because of its deep yellow colour. The colour yellow is thought to be the colour of the Guru (teacher) and the principle colour of the Devas (gods). It’s no wonder that Turmeric is in a great number of Indian foods and curry’s and is attributed with a great many miraculous qualities in folklore. In southern India, during the traditional wedding ceremony, the bride and groom will bathe in Turmeric and milk the day before the wedding begins. It is also thought that burning Turmeric or wearing yellow string around the neck with a piece of Turmeric attached is an effective way to keep away evil spirits. In the same way, smearing Turmeric on the skin is thought to be a good way to keep infection away. In Bengal, it was thought that blood from human sacrifice was essential during the cultivation and growing of Turmeric plants for the root to gain its deep yellow colour. It is also interesting to note that in the 13th century Marco Polo was the man responsible for naming Turmeric ‘Indian Saffron’ although many then came to think of Turmeric and Saffron as the same plant from his writings.

Turmeric is an herbaceous perennial herb native to India and Southern Asia that grows to a height of 90-180cm. The leaves have long stalks (petioles), and are ovate in shape, tapered at each end, smooth, and green in colour with a reddish central vein running down the centre of the leaf. The flowers are pale yellow to white in colour and grow in spikes of up to 30. The roots are fleshy, oblong, pale brown on the outside and yellowy-orange on the inside and have a fragrant aroma and a slightly bitter, sharp taste.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. Iron is needed for a number of highly complex processes that continuously take place in the body on a molecular level and that are indispensable to human life.  Formation of haemoglobin is the chief function of this mineral – this is the primary protein found in red blood cells and represents about two thirds of the body’s iron.  Haemoglobin binds to the oxygen molecules that you breathe in from the air and releases them into your tissues.  The brain receives around 20% of the blood oxygen and a proper flow of blood to the brain can stimulate cognitive activity and help to create new neural pathways, it is especially important that children consume enough iron in their diet – iron deficiency in the first two years of a child’s life is associated with delayed cognitive and psychomotor development.

Vitamin E is an umbrella term for a group of eight fat soluble compounds (tocopherols) that are found in a wide variety of wholefoods.  These compounds, of which alpha-tocopherol is the most biologically active, have a number of functions in the body.

Surprised I was able to discern the difference it makes to have a product made from curcumin longa ....somehow seems more 'refined' in a good way. I make my own oven chips with sweet potato,olive oil, turmeric and ground black pepper...salt to taste if you want, but plenty tasty enough without ! Recommended as a flavour, not just an ingredient.
