Browse Indigo Herbs Valerian products and all the wonderful properties that are associated with this plant. Indigo Herbs stocks Valerian Root Tincture and Valerian Root Cut Tea. Both of these products are of the very best quality and boast some of the best relaxing properties in the botanical world. For over a 1,000 years this ingredient has been utilised by Europeans for a multitude of reasons from de-stressing to getting a good nights sleep. Following in this tradition Indigo Herbs presents to you these two great products. We also stock a range of Valerian Capsules within our leading guest brands.

The oldest historical text that mentions the use of Valerian dates back to 460 BC where its properties were associated with cooking and occult spells related to love magic. Stretching out of Europe Valerian was even used by Arab physicians who heard about the herb through the works of the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates and the Roman physician Dioscorides. In the East some species of Valerian were used to scent clothes and bath water even though the root of the plant has a notorious reputation for smelling bad. Historical records also show that the name of Valerian has changed over time in Europe. Some used to call it 'Nard' while others referred to it as 'Amantilla'. The origins of the popularised name Valerian may of come from two different sources. Some say that it comes from the Latin 'valere' (good health) and others stipulate that it was used by the Valerius and so became famous from his use.

Valerian is a perennial that is native to Europe and that can grow to about 2 feet high and more than a foot across. The flowers are white that can blend to a pinkish/purple and bloom in June. Growing in damp grassland areas this plant has dark green leaves which are covered in hairs underneath. The root is greyish brown and has no odour when it is fresh. When the leaves or stem are broken it is not uncommon for cats to be attracted to the smell.

Making a delicious cup of tea with loose leaf herbs is simple and easy. Brewing loose leaves is a traditional art with many different styles and varying items of tea brewing equipment on the market. There are one cup teaballs that can be filled with loose leaves, flowers, and barks and submerged straight into a boiling cup of hot water and then left to infuse. The rule of thumb with brewing loose leaves is to allow them to fully release their beneficial aromatic phyto-chemical content.

This process is lovingly called brewing and takes 5-10 minutes so a tea cosy is recommended if you are using a pot. When making a pot of tea it is advised that you use one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per person and one for the pot. Any true tea maker who truly appreciates the art would recommend heating the pot first, and of course when the tea is fully infused it is absolutely necessary that the drinker sits down and takes a minute to enjoy! For full instructions go to our How to make Herbal Tea Page.

The botanical ingredients can be made into a herbal tea by decocting the herb by immersing in boiling water over a low heat for 10 minutes, this extracts the phyto-chemicals from the bark, root, plant matter. Use 2 cups of boiling water per person.

Serving:

1-2 teasp per cup of boiling hot water of cut herb root to be drunk when needed.

1 teaspoon equals 2 grams (1 tsp = 2g)
  • Produced to GMP standards.
  • Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
  • Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
  • Re-sealable air tight, foil pouch.
  • 100% pure botanical ingredients, absolutely nothing added.

Manufacture Process

Before peak maturity, the Valerian plants that are used for Indigo Herbs Valerian Root Cut Tea are harvested and identified by plant experts before the leaves and small stem parts are stripped away leaving only the root. Only prime examples of the root are used in our Valerian Root Cut Tea. Damaged or underdeveloped roots are disregarded through a process of elimination. The best plant matter is then slow dried out of direct sunlight and tested for pollutants to make sure that you get only the very finest root for your tea.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out in a small ml measuring cup, medicine cup or spoon, and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Manufacture Process

Before peak maturity the Valeriana officinalis plants are cut and identified by plant experts before the root is cut away from the rest of the plant. Only prime examples of the roots are used in our Valerian Root Tincture. Damaged or underdeveloped roots are disregarded through a process of elimination. The root material then undergoes a process of cold percolation in order to extract the active constituents into tincture form. The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the blend. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added. It is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.

It really works as a short term calming drink, it sedates and allowed me to find a little sleep in difficult circumstances. However as per directions, no more than short term use recommended. Over long term the positive effects weaken and some withdrawal effects can be felt. However however, I have a weakened constitution due to chronic illness and everyone is different!

The product itself is fine, no issues with the quality, seems good. However, it arrived with the top slightly open which had caused the product to leak out, Valerian isn't the nicest smelling thing in the world so the box smelled when it was opened and the bottle was all sticky and nasty.

Valerian Essential Oil 10ml from Indigo Herbs is a woody, musky scented aromatherapy oil that has been traditionally used as a sleep aid and relaxant. It was known as “heal all” in medieval times, so varied and versatile were its uses. Valerian essential oil can be diffused in an aromatherapy oil burner or diluted in a pure carrier oil to harness the power of this herb.

At Indigo Herbs we are passionate about premium quality botanicals. Explore the tabs on this page to find out more about the quality, manufacture and suggested use of this essential oil. At Indigo Herbs we are committed to empowering optimum health and nutrition and assisting you to take responsibility for your own health and wellbeing, by having access to many of natures healing botanicals.

Also known as: Garden Valerian, Garden Heliotrope

Valerian essential oil is most famously used to combat insomnia and treat other sleep related disorders. It is thought that the active components of Valerian coordinate an ideal release of hormones and balance the body’s cycles to stimulate restful, undisturbed sleep.

The same components in this oil that enable sleep can also help to lower anxiety and stress levels, reducing the chemicals in the body that can lead to anxiety and stress. The valerenic acid and valerenol contained in Valerian essential oil act as anti-anxiety agents, stabilising the central nervous system. Diffuse in an aromatherapy oil burner or dilute with a pure carrier oil and create a bedtime massage or bath oil to harness the power of this essential oil.

Blends well with; patchouli, rosemary, cedarwood, mandarin and petitgrain essential oils.

Using Aromatherapy in your daily routine is simple, easy and can be enormously beneficial. Pure neat essential oils can be evaporated into the environment and inhaled while products that have already been diluted in an oil can be applied straight to the skin. There are lots of different ways to utilize the pure neat essential oils; these can be made into a room spray or used in an an essential oil burner/ vaporizer.

This is a lovely way to perfume an environment and essential oils are very good at affecting the mood, mind and emotions when evaporated into the air. Adding essential oils to your bath is the best way to ensure the oils are absorbed through the pores of the skin while also inhaling the vapors; maximum benefit can then be had whilst enjoying a soak. Additionally the neat oils can be diluted into a carrier medium. This can be a cream, body butter, face cream, vegetable body oil and bath salts to name a few. For full instructions go to our How to use Aromatherapy page.

Valerian essential oil can be used in the bath, or vaporized in an oil burner. It can be added to a massage oil or cream. Use 6-8 drops per bath and 10 -18 drops per 30ml of carrier oil. See Essential Oil Dosage Chart

  • Produced to GMP standards.
  • Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs.
  • 100% pure botanical ingredients - no solvents are used in the extraction process
  • Bottled in a pharmacoepial grade brown glass bottle.

Manufacture Process

Our essential oils are manufactured to GMP standards using steam distillation or cold pressing.

Indigo Herbs Valerian Essential Oil is extracted using the "steam distillation" method. In this process the botanical material is placed in a still and steam is forced over the material. The hot steam helps to release the aromatic molecules from the plant material since the steam forces open the pockets in which the oils are kept. Molecules of the volatile oils then escape and evaporate into the steam. The temperature of the steam needs to be carefully controlled - just enough to force the plant material to let go of the essential oil, yet not too hot as to burn the plant material or the essential oil. The steam now containing the essential oil is passed through a cooling system to condense the steam which forms a liquid. The essential oil is then separated from the water and bottled, resulting in 100% pure essential oil.

Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.

Essential oils need to be diluted first; never apply an essential oil directly to the skin. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth.
