The oldest historical text that mentions the use of Valerian dates back to 460 BC where its properties were associated with cooking and occult spells related to love magic. Stretching out of Europe Valerian was even used by Arab physicians who heard about the herb through the works of the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates and the Roman physician Dioscorides. In the East some species of Valerian were used to scent clothes and bath water even though the root of the plant has a notorious reputation for smelling bad. Historical records also show that the name of Valerian has changed over time in Europe. Some used to call it 'Nard' while others referred to it as 'Amantilla'. The origins of the popularised name Valerian may of come from two different sources. Some say that it comes from the Latin 'valere' (good health) and others stipulate that it was used by the Valerius and so became famous from his use.
Valerian is a perennial that is native to Europe and that can grow to about 2 feet high and more than a foot across. The flowers are white that can blend to a pinkish/purple and bloom in June. Growing in damp grassland areas this plant has dark green leaves which are covered in hairs underneath. The root is greyish brown and has no odour when it is fresh. When the leaves or stem are broken it is not uncommon for cats to be attracted to the smell.
