Teff is an ancient grain, indigenous to Ethiopia where it has been a key staple food for millennia. Technically - like quinoa - it is a seed, tiny yet mighty in terms of nutritional content. It is so nutritionally dense it is thought to be the secret weapon of the country's long distance running stars!
Teff seeds come from a tall grass that grows primarily in the Ethiopian highlands, it is one of the world's first cultivated grains that is believed to have been domesticated between 8,000 - 5,000 BCE. Being a seed, it is gluten free and makes an excellent alternative to traditional grains. It has a sweet, light yet earthy and nutty taste and is a tasty addition to porridge, stews, stuffing and pilaf.
