Used as an ingredient, this plant has a history that stretches back to the time of Aztec and Mayan peoples. Following the wisdom of these cultures Indigo Herbs chooses the most effective natural botanicals to share with the world.

During the 1940’s, the scientist Dr. Russel Marker was searching for a plant that had hormone chemical properties and heard of an herb that was used by the Mexican Indians. His search led to the discovery of Wild Yam which contributed to producing the first contraceptive pill. Wild Yam is also used in Traditional Chinese Medicine although this strain of Dioscorea is completely different to the Mexican variety.

Wild Yam is native to Mexico and eastern parts of North America. It prefers partial shade and a sandy moist soil. This creeping vine can grow to a length of 15 feet with long heart shaped leaves that can get as big as 4 inches wide. The small, greenish-yellow flowers are produced in drooping clusters about 3 to 6 inches long (male) and in drooping, spike-like heads (female), blooming from June to August. From the leaf node Wild Yam produces a tuber like seed that are sometimes called ‘air potatoes’.

Using Herbal and Superfood powders on a daily basis is simple, easy and can be really delicious. The simplest way is to rehydrate the powder in a little filtered water to make a shot, this can easily be prepared once, twice or three times per day if you are taking the herbs therapeutically. However sometimes the herbs can be bitter so the botanical powders can be added to a superfood smoothie instead of just water. The smoothie can be made with a base of nut milk, seed milk or non-dairy milk such as rice milk. Alternatively the main body of the smoothie can be created with fruit or vegetable juices.

Additional superfood and herb powders can be added to fortify the smoothie with extra beneficial properties. The powders are largely dissolvable and can be scooped in and then blended, shaken or stirred until fully mixed with the liquid. Any true Superfood smoothie disciple would advise that the list of possibilities is endless with the goal to feel great and potentially replace a meal with this glass of super goodness. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Powders page.

Another option is to use a Capsule Machine that can be bought from the Indigo Herbs website. Filling capsules with your favourite herb has never been easier when you buy a Capsule machine. You can then be sure that the capsules you are taking are 100% pure ingredients without fillers added by some companies.

This herbal powder can be re-hydrated in water or fruit juice, it can be encapsulated or added to a herbal powder blend. Please consult the Herbal Materia Medica or Medical Herbalist for this botanical ingredients uses.

Manufacture Process

Indigo Herbs Wild Yam Powder comes from Mexico where it is cultivated for the specific purpose of being made into powder. Wild Yam from this producer is some of finest produced Dioscorea villosa on the market. The typical production method employed is to generate perfect root growth and only harvest when the plants are at peak maturity. The Wild Yam is then carefully dug up making sure all roots are intact. The main body of the plant is then cut away leaving the precious roots. After meticulous cleaning and screening only the very best Wild Yam roots proceed to the process of dehydration in special dehumidifiers. These machines make sure that all moisture is taken from the root matter before the dry root can finally be milled into a fine powder. All powders are then tested for heavy metals and other pollutants before being made ready for shipping. This product is 100% pure botanical ingredients, with absolutely nothing added and manufactured to GMP standards.

Women with hormone-dependent conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and cancers of the breast, ovaries, or uterus should not take or use wild yam due to its possible estrogenic effects. Men with prostate cancer should also avoid taking wild yam.

Pregnant women should not take wild yam because it may stimulate the uterus to contract, possibly causing a miscarriage.

Because very little information is available on how wild yam might affect an infant or a small child, its use is not recommended while breast-feeding or during early childhood.

Taking herbal remedies in a Tincture or Fluid extract preparation is simple and easy. The tincture can be measured out into the small ml measuring cup that comes with each bottle. (A medicine cup or spoon could also be used) and the tincture can be taken directly.

However some people do find the bitter tincture taste to be too strong, so it may be a good idea to dilute the drops in water or fruit juice. For children, the elderly, those with a sensitive constitution or those avoiding alcohol, the alcohol can be evaporated from the tincture. This can be done by putting the drops in boiling water and leaving for 10 minutes to evaporate. For full instructions go to our How to take Herbal Tincture page.

Wild Yam Tincture can be added to water or fruit juice.

The cold percolation method employs a gradient circulation of the solution which keeps the plant ingredients in perpetual contact with the ethanol. This technique is faster and more efficient than maceration and ensures there is less waste of precious plant materials. This premium quality product is manufactured to GMP standards and Quality Assured by Indigo Herbs. It is 100% pure botanical ingredients, completely free of synthetic ingredients with absolutely nothing added.

I've used other suppliers with mixed results and I'm now trying Indigo Herbs. I've just started using some of their herbs, so I cant vouch for their effectiveness at the moment. BUT, the help they gave me with their products, their service, packaging, delivery time, cost and ease of use is brilliant! I hope to be able to feedback on the effectiveness of the herbs soon - as this and the cost are the most important aspect of any such service! John A bristol
