During the 1940’s, the scientist Dr. Russel Marker was searching for a plant that had hormone chemical properties and heard of an herb that was used by the Mexican Indians. His search led to the discovery of Wild Yam which contributed to producing the first contraceptive pill. Wild Yam is also used in Traditional Chinese Medicine although this strain of Dioscorea is completely different to the Mexican variety.
Wild Yam is native to Mexico and eastern parts of North America. It prefers partial shade and a sandy moist soil. This creeping vine can grow to a length of 15 feet with long heart shaped leaves that can get as big as 4 inches wide. The small, greenish-yellow flowers are produced in drooping clusters about 3 to 6 inches long (male) and in drooping, spike-like heads (female), blooming from June to August. From the leaf node Wild Yam produces a tuber like seed that are sometimes called ‘air potatoes’.
